Holding Up The Sun

Exclaim! – Toronto, ON – Danny Click: Life Is A Good Place – by Kerry Doole

He may be a little too mainstream in sound and approach to appeal to the alt-country fan, but Frisco, TX-based songsmith Click has plenty to offer. He has a pleasantly melodic voice that never overreaches and a very fluent guitar style. He comes from a blues-rock background (from his days in Austin), but his sound now has a Petty/Mellencamp/Hiatt, roots-flavoured vibe. As a lyricist, Click possesses a personal and reflective bent that’s a touch reminiscent of Jackson Browne, though lacking the latter’s incisiveness. Click wrote and produced all the material on this, his fourth album, but surrounded himself with an impressive cast of session players, including B3 player Mark Goldenberg (Browne) and steel guitar master Greg Leisz. Lap and pedal steel are featured prominently, adding resonance and gravitas not always supplied by Click’s voice. Female backing vocals add depth to “Ten Years,” an album highlight. The title track runs seven minutes and rather nicely sums up Click’s philosophy. Those keen on the West coast singer-songwriter style will find plenty to enjoy here.
