Blues-rock singer/songwriter guitarist Danny Click delivered a sparse, intimate set recently at Genghis Cohen that felt original, authentic and genuine. Click’s performance was augmented and accented by the complimentary talents of singer Emily Zulik, offering lovely accompanying vocals and harmonies, and guitarist Steve Posstel who played slide.

The incredibly nice and down-to-earth artist has been compared to Tom Petty crossed with Wilco, spiced with the modern tradition of Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt.

That’s high praise but Click is the real deal. His searing guitar work has also been placed in the league and pantheon of Stevie Ray Vaughn and David Lindley. Yes Click can really rock out with finesse and blast off some tasty licks. Originally from Tipton, Indiana, Click eventually moved to Austin, Texas, winning the respect and accolades among some of alt-country’s biggest names yet remained a best-kept secret. That changed when Click’s CD, Life Is A Good Place, was released in April, 2011 and spent more than 12 consecutive months on the Country, pop, and Americana radio charts. The first single, “Wait My Turn”, reached #1 on Nashville’s Indie World Country Chart, and the second single, “I Feel Good Today”, topped out at #14 on the NMW national Country chart alongside Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift.

A number of songs off that CD were featured during the nine-song set as was new material from his latest CD, Holding Up The Sun. Now based in the Bay Area, Click is known for penning wide-open songs deeply rooted in a life well-lived. They are poignant and true resonating deeply on an emotional and universal level. Toward the show’s end, the low-key yet impassioned set really heated up with a blistering take on raucous and rowdy “Baptize Me Over Elvis Presley’s Grave,” written by Tim P., the lead singer and founder of Flies on Fire, that was known as a significant force on the club scene in the 1990s, who jumped onstage to sing with Click. The two artists share a mutual admiration for each other and are clearly fans of one of one another passing comfortable and knowing looks to each other during this performance. It was one of several highlights in a satisfying and memorable set by Danny Click who possesses a singular, potent combination of artistic integrity and fine musical chops.
